Both maps has an error in them - you cannot go directly down from the portal, you can only take the left one.

True, but you'll figure it out since there's only 1 spot you can move to initially, and the number of moves is the same.

David, I guess you didn't see the 2nd map, "If Going for BOTH EMERALDS". only 27 moves from the 15k path.

He did see it, his point is that the two different routes only differ by 1 move, not 3 moves.

The first set of routes (going only for 15K) has incorrect path to 20K emeralds... it should only take 30 moves, not 32... Drop down 1 move from the 15K tower and go left, not sure why Charlie chose to pick up the path where he did. Bottom line... the 2 path variants differ in the num,ber of moves by just 1 move

Those Pattern Chests have the new Magic Penetration pattern. Seems like the devs are saying if you want that pattern fast, you have to spend a lot of moves.

Considering that it has Kercheis' stamped logo on it, I'd imagine it was drawn by them and not Charlie. I'd find it hard to imagine Charlie would take the time in Photoshop to draw lines in a map when Kercheis is already assembling it, and Charlie often has incomplete guides on HWC as it is. Just saying...
